"Take Me To Your Leader" focuses on trend watching in consumer behaviors, marketing, technology, and social media, but is often led astray by its eccentric authors and their love of music, traveling, random thoughts, and pirates.

What I find curious is that though this technology has been available to the public and to developers since a few weeks after the iPhone Classic was released in June 2007, there have really been very few applications to take advantage of it.

Do you think the Microsoft introduction of "tagging" will have significance in terms of popularizing the capability? As typical to Microsoft they've introduced it with the fanfare of a first innovation. (see http://tag.microsoft.com)

Personally, I do think it's significant, that's why I've been following it for quite a while. I think creative marketing people have to think about ways to use it however. It's kinda like a visual "tinyurl"... but it can be used for so much more. Hidden video, for example, or the dozens of inventory applications used in industry for UPC barcodes.

I hope all of you on Madison Avenue are careful about how you use it these first times to popularize it. What you do will tag-and-feather the concept for years to come. First use to embed obscenity, for example, in a hip-hop train billboard, for example will be successful once, but make everyone shy about using it in the future.

In trying it out, I've been underwhelmed by the performance (speed) of decoding, perception of the camera (often mis-reads or fails to read the codes). I'm confident that will improve. Encouragement by big marketing dollars will go a long way to inspire Microsoft to focus engineering time on it.

Good luck, use the force for good.
