A friend tipped me off to this great post on Josh Spear’s blog on “Cat Cafes” in Tokyo, Japan. Essentially you can go to to a cafe and rent a cat to play with for an hour. As Josh points out – this is really indicative of how unique their fast paced culture is. Althought I don’t see this as outside the realm of possability in a major cities like New York or London.

japan – intergalactic, paradoxical, crazy, inexplicable, controversial, beautiful, innocent… but never plain. sensory overload. such a “cookie-cutter” culture yet encourages taking risks on new ideas as a matter of survival…counterintuitive, right? i miss the “spaghetti and whiskey” bars!

Interesting concept indeed, though i wonder how they treat the “rentals”. I must sneak my way into one of these cafes and do some undercover recon. My human is probably behind this. Kitties of the world, UNITE! http://tinyurl.com/6caw5w

I just returned back to the US and A after living in Tokyo the last 7 years, and although I never went to a Cat Cafe, it definitely came up as a “thing to do” on some weekends. (Odaiba as the best one.)
I grew up with dogs and cats in Los Angeles (among other bi/quadruped creatures), but my Japanese girlfriend, now wife, had never owned a pet of any kind growing up in Godzilla land. Figured it would be a good way to show her what she’s been missing.
